A Victorian Sterling Silver Vinaigrette Box, Birmingham, with Monogram
Description
A Victorian Sterling Silver Vinaigrette Box, crafted from silver-toned metal. The small, rectangular hinged box features an intricately decorated exterior lid with engraved or chased foliate and scrollwork motifs, radiating from a central oval cartouche containing an ornate monogram, possibly ‘SS’ or ‘BS’. Internally, the box features a hinged, perforated plate, which lifts to reveal a small compartment containing a dark brown, fabric-like pad or brush. A faint stamped mark, appearing as the numeral ‘7’ or an inverted ‘L’, is visible on the interior surface of the main lid. The design and construction are consistent with a personal accessory of the period.
