An English Sterling Silver and Tortoiseshell Coaster, London, 1891-1892
Description
A circular, shallow dish or coaster featuring a sterling silver rim surrounding a dark, mottled central insert, consistent with tortoiseshell. The center is decoratively engraved with a classical-style musical motif, including a large bow, a drum or tambourine, a horn, and flowing ribbons. The metal rim bears clear hallmarks, notably a lion passant, a crowned leopard’s head (indicating the London assay office), and a lowercase ‘q’ date letter within a rectangular cartouche, alongside other less defined stamps, dating the piece to 1891-1892.
