Description
A Charles May Birmingham Sterling Silver and Cranberry Glass Scent Bottle, dated 1894. This small, ornate, hinged-lid container features a cylindrical dark red translucent glass body. The decorative sterling silver top and hinged lid are extensively engraved with scrollwork and foliate motifs. Visible English hallmarks on both the silver collar and lid include the maker’s mark “CM,” a lion passant indicating sterling silver, an anchor for the Birmingham assay office, and a date letter ‘u’ for 1894. The container holds a reddish liquid or substance and is fitted with a clear, faceted glass stopper; the lid’s interior is lined with a pinkish-orange textile.
