A Japanese Satsuma Ware Octagonal Plate, Kentani Mark
Description
A Japanese Satsuma ware octagonal plate, bearing the Kentani mark. Decorated with intricate polychrome enamels and extensive gilding. The obverse features a central scene depicting numerous male figures, possibly warriors or villagers, engaged in an outdoor activity amidst a snowy landscape. Surrounding this central motif are four lobed cartouches, each containing one or two seated or standing figures, possibly scholars or elders, interspersed with highly detailed geometric and floral gold-on-red patterns. The reverse reveals an unglazed raised foot rim on a crackled off-white glaze background. A square gold cartouche at the center of the base contains four black characters, which translate to Satsuma Kentani (薩摩賢谷).
