Description
A pair of 19th Century Meiji Era Japanese Imari scalloped porcelain plates. Both plates feature extensive polychrome decoration, primarily utilizing underglaze cobalt blue, overglaze iron red, and various enamels including green and gilding. The central roundel of the left plate displays a blue underglaze mythical creature or phoenix on a dark blue ground, while the right plate’s roundel depicts a blue underglaze figural or mythological scene. The wide borders of both plates are divided into radiating panels, alternating between geometric patterns and elaborate floral motifs with birds. The reverse of each plate is decorated with underglaze cobalt blue scrolling designs along the scalloped rim and foot rim. No specific reign marks or maker’s text are visible.
