Lot 252:
A Group of Six Early 20th-Century Salt-Glazed Stoneware Bottles and Flagons
Description
A collection of six early 20th-century salt-glazed stoneware bottles and flagons, primarily featuring a two-tone finish with dark brown upper sections and cream-to-off-white bodies. The group comprises five upright bottles, one of which includes a handle, and one bottle presented horizontally with a screw-top closure. Visible impressed and printed text on the bottles indicates their commercial origins and dates. These include a bottle marked ‘JAMES SMITH BOTANICAL BREWER BRIGHOUSE’ dated 1913, another from ‘J.H. JONES & SONS BOTANICAL BEVERAGES’ dated 1931 and bearing warnings regarding “PROSECUTED FOR ILLEGAL USE OR DETENTION,” and a bottle from ‘WINDER BROS BOTANICAL BREWERS’ with instructions stating “BUYING, SELLING OR USING THIS BOTTLE IS ILLEGAL.” A further bottle is partially marked ‘SCRATCHERD & [Co?] WINE & SPIRIT MERCHANTS’.
