Description
This is a small, rectangular hinged box, identified through market comparison as a Georgian Sterling Silver Vinaigrette Box, likely originating from Birmingham. The exterior is crafted from a silver-toned metal, featuring an engraved or chased decorative pattern on the lid with a central blank cartouche surrounded by scrolling foliate and floral motifs. The interior reveals a gold-toned metal, consistent with gilding, with the inside of the lid bearing faint, incised or stamped markings that appear to include a numeral followed by letters, which are indistinct. The lower section of the box contains a removable or hinged insert, also of gold-toned metal, intricately pierced with a detailed openwork design of floral and foliate elements.
