William Henry Margetson - The Sea Hath Its Pearls Print
Description
A print by William Henry Margetson titled ‘The Sea Hath Its Pearls’. The oval-shaped artwork depicts a young woman in flowing attire collecting shells on a sandy beach with the ocean to her right and a distant shoreline visible. It is housed within a highly ornate, irregularly shaped, giltwood or gesso and gilt frame, exhibiting Rococo-revival stylistic elements such as elaborate scrolling acanthus leaves, C-scrolls, and prominent shell motifs. An additional decorative inner border, featuring stylized wave or cloud-like patterns in white and grey, surrounds the central image. A sticker on the lower edge of the frame identifies “Shelbys Auctioneers Ltd” and the number “33,” with an adjacent label bearing “3880.” The item is consistent with a late 19th to early 20th-century period.
