A Japanese Satsuma Charger Meiji Period, depicting a Geisha Girl and Attendants
Description
A Japanese Satsuma Charger from the Meiji Period (late 19th to early 20th century). This large, circular ceramic decorative charger features a cream-colored crackled glaze with polychrome enamel decoration and gilding. The central design depicts a traditional Japanese female figure in elaborate attire, against a landscape background with smaller figures, pagoda-like structures, and cherry blossoms, rendered in a style reminiscent of late 19th to early 20th-century Japanese export ware with Ukiyo-e and Satsuma influences. The wide border is decorated with intricate stylized geometric, floral, and phoenix motifs. The reverse features an off-white crackled glaze with a faint, illegible impressed or stamped mark.
