Description

A large Japanese Imari porcelain charger, Meiji Period. This porcelain charger is decorated in the classic Imari palette of underglaze cobalt blue, overglaze iron-red, and green enamels with gilded highlights. The central circular medallion features a floral arrangement including peonies and chrysanthemums within a double blue line border. This is surrounded by a wide border of radiating shaped panels; alternating sections depict stylised landscapes with gnarled pine trees and flowering prunus blossoms, while smaller circular medallions containing floral sprays are set against a deep cobalt blue ground. The reverse of the charger is finished with three simple underglaze blue floral or leaf sprigs around the rim and two concentric blue circles around the unglazed foot rim. No maker marks are present on the base. There is a small inventory sticker on the front face bearing the handwritten number 12672 / 2.

Diameter: Approximately 31 cm.
