Description

This early 20th-century mantel clock is housed in an arched mahogany case with a stepped base and a glazed front door. The brass dial features an engraved foliate centre and corner spandrels, complemented by a silvered chapter ring with black Arabic numerals and Breguet-style hands. The dial includes two subsidiary dials for FAST / SLOW regulation and CHIME / SILENT selection. The three winding holes indicate a triple-train mechanical movement designed to chime the quarters and strike the hour, characteristic of German movements from the period such as those by Junghans. Affixed to the base is a rectangular brass presentation plaque with the following inscription: PRESENTED TO BRO. W. W. SHEPHERD, BY THE BRETHREN OF THE LOYAL LODGE NO. 251. AS A TOKEN OF THEIR ESTEEM AND APPRECIATION OF HIS SERVICES AS ORGANIST. FEBY. 1928. The clock is accompanied by a brass T-bar winding key.

Base width: 15.5 inches (39.5 cm).
