A Pair of Japanese Arita Export Porcelain Ginger Jars and Covers
Description
A pair of porcelain ginger jars and covers, identified by web consensus as Japanese Arita export ware from the late 19th or early 20th century. The jars are of ovoid form, decorated with a vibrant iron-red ground embellished with scrolling gilt foliate patterns and small circular floral medallions. Two large, lobed white reserves on each jar feature polychrome enamel decoration depicting birds perched amongst flowering peony and prunus branches. The domed covers are decorated in a conforming style to match the main bodies. A small adhesive label with the number 1776 is visible on one jar. No maker’s marks or signatures are visible.
