A Pair of Italian Sorrento Style Marquetry Inlaid Work Tables
Description
A pair of late 19th to early 20th-century Italian work or sewing tables constructed in the Sorrento style. The tables feature frames of walnut or mahogany with decorative panels of olive wood and various fruitwoods used for the marquetry. The larger table has an octagonal top with canted corners, while the smaller table is rectangular in form. Both hinged lids display elaborate marquetry inlay consisting of a central floral bouquet framed by an intricate scrolling foliate border. The interiors are fitted with divided wooden compartments suitable for needlework or jewellery storage, finished in a natural wood grain. Each table is supported by four slender cabriole legs, with some legs featuring additional inlaid foliate motifs at the knees. There are no visible maker’s marks, although a small inventory sticker is located on the interior rim of the larger table.
