Lot 235:
A 19th Century British Naval Style Officer's Sword
Description
A 19th-century naval-style officer’s sword, featuring a curved steel blade with a single fuller extending along most of its length. The hilt is constructed of brass or gilt-brass, characterised by a D-shaped knuckle bow and a prominent lion’s head pommel, a design consistent with British Royal Navy officer patterns from the late 18th to mid-19th century. The grip is ribbed and appears to be wrapped in an organic material, likely shagreen or sharkskin. The guard includes a small decorative langet. Dark, mottled areas on the blade near the hilt indicate possible original etching or a maker’s mark, though no individual characters or symbols are distinguishable in its current state.
