A Pair of Mid-20th Century African Carved Hardwood Busts
Description
A pair of hand-carved wooden bust sculptures, one depicting a female and one a male figure, rendered in the style of East African Makonde art. The sculptures are fashioned from a dense, dark hardwood with a highly polished finish, characteristic of ebony. The female bust is distinguished by a tall, ridged central hairstyle and a textured, tiered collar at the base of the neck. The male bust exhibits short, tightly textured hair and a smooth, curved base. Both figures display stylized facial features including almond-shaped eyes and full lips. A modern white rectangular adhesive inventory label is present on the neck of the female bust, inscribed with the numbers 2552 and 7.
