Description

A 19th-century vernacular country stool, of the type often associated with tavern or workshop use. The stool comprises a thick, circular solid wood seat, possibly elm, displaying a prominent grain. It is supported on four splayed, turned legs of a bulbous and tapered profile, united by a simple X-frame stretcher. The legs and stretcher are constructed from a secondary hardwood, likely beech or ash, finished with a dark stain. The construction is typical of country-made furniture, featuring turned legs socketed directly into the underside of the seat, with the X-stretcher joined at the centre with a lap joint. A small paper label is adhered to the seat bearing the handwritten numbers 18.6 and 9731.
