Lot 163:
U.S. Model 1840 Militia NCO Sword and Scabbard
Description
A U.S. Model 1840 pattern militia non-commissioned officer’s sword. The piece features a straight, double-edged steel blade that tapers to a sharp point. The hilt is formed from brass, featuring a cross-guard with distinctive flared, flat-faced terminals and a flattened ovoid pommel. The grip is wrapped in dark metal wire. The sword is paired with its original scabbard, which is constructed from leather-covered wood with brass fittings. The brass locket includes a raised decorative trefoil or floral motif. Indistinct etched markings are present on the blade ricasso, though these are too worn to be legible. A white inventory label marked 105 is adhered to the locket.
Blade length: 78.7 cm.
