19th Century Mahogany Secretaire Cabinet
Description
This 19th-century English mahogany secretaire cabinet is designed in the late Georgian style. The upper section features a sloping fall-front that opens to reveal a fitted interior comprising six small drawers, arranged in two sets of three, flanking central open pigeonholes. Each drawer is fitted with a small circular turned knob. The lower section consists of a single large cupboard door with a recessed panel and decorative cusped corners, a design characteristic often found on the trunk doors of Georgian longcase clocks. The piece is constructed with mahogany veneers showing a rich, dark patina. Hardware includes brass hinges and a lock to the interior of the fall-front, with circular escutcheons on the exterior. The writing surface on the interior of the fall-front is currently lacking its leather or baize lining.
