George III Sterling Silver Presentation Goblet London 1789
Description
A George III sterling silver presentation goblet of traditional bell-shaped form supported by a slender baluster stem on a circular flared foot. The exterior is decorated with bright-cut engraving featuring a band of scrolling foliate motifs and geometric borders around the upper rim. Below the decorative band is an engraved presentation inscription that includes the visible text TO BE PRESENTED J COOPER. The foot is further detailed with reeded and bright-cut borders. The item is fully hallmarked near the rim with a maker mark SR over CB in a rectangular punch, attributed to the partnership of Stephen Reed and Charles Barnett. The hallmark sequence includes the Lion Passant for sterling silver, the Leopard Head Crowned for the London assay office, the lowercase Roman letter o for the year 1789, and the Sovereign Head duty mark of King George III.
