Lot 252:
A Collection of Victorian and Edwardian Tortoiseshell and Silver-Toned Writing and Personal Accessories
Description
This collection comprises several late 19th and early 20th-century personal and writing-related accessories. Included is an aide-mémoire featuring three polished ivory or bone leaves secured by a metal pivot stud. The lot contains multiple tortoiseshell cases: one rectangular card case with silver-toned foliate scrollwork inlay and a central shield-shaped cartouche; a second card case with a simple silver-toned border; and a larger rounded rectangular case of a form suitable for spectacles or a dip pen. A silver-toned metal case features engine-turned linear decoration and a thumbpiece set with a blue cabochon, potentially intended for calling cards or cigarettes. Additional items include a small wooden sliding box and a soft-bristle brush. The tortoiseshell items are characteristic of English craftsmanship from the Victorian period. No maker marks are clearly legible on the silver-toned or tortoiseshell pieces.
