Description

A pair of Victorian sterling silver sauce boats of oval form designed in the George III style. Each vessel features a beaded rim and an upswept flying scroll handle. The bodies are supported by three shell-capped legs terminating in pad feet. The items are of solid silver construction. The following hallmarks are struck to the side of the body: a rectangular cartouche containing the maker mark E.S and B for Edward Souter Barnsley and Co; a square shield with clipped top corners containing the capital Roman letter D for the year 1878; a lion passant indicating sterling silver; an anchor for the Birmingham Assay Office; and a profile head of Queen Victoria used as a duty mark. One sauce boat retains two adhesive labels to the interior with the numbers SILVER 6781 and 9702 5.
