A Cased Wooden Scale Model of the Santa Maria
Description
A wooden scale model of the 15th-century carrack Santa Maria, the flagship of Christopher Columbus. The tiered wooden hull is constructed with visible planking and features three masts rigged with off-white fabric sails, with the mainsail bearing a red cross pattee. The vessel is dressed with various heraldic flags and pennants, including the arms of Castile and León. The model is mounted on two turned wooden supports on a wooden base. An embossed metal plaque on the base is inscribed with the text Santa Maria in a Gothic script above the date 1492. The model is housed within a glazed mahogany-toned display case.
