Lot 116:
A Meiji Period Japanese Arita Blue and White Porcelain Vase Table Lamp by Seibei
Description
This table lamp is converted from a late 19th-century Japanese Arita porcelain vase. The porcelain base is decorated with scrolling floral and foliate motifs in underglaze blue. The underside of the base bears a blue underglaze mark in two columns. The right column contains the characters for Dai Nippon Hizen and the left column contains the characters for Arita Seibei sei, identifying the maker as Seibei of Arita in Hizen Province during the Meiji period. The vase is fitted with a metal lamp mount and a vintage tapered drum-style shade. The shade is constructed from tan-coloured parchment or stiffened fabric and is finished with a decorative braided cord trim at the upper rim. The electrical components include an early-style inline switch and a cord that is severed and frayed at the end.
