Lot 339:
Ferrous and Copper Alloy Skeleton Keys and Advertising Bottle Openers, Victorian to Mid-20th Century
Description
This lot comprises a bulk assemblage of antique and vintage hardware. The collection consists primarily of barrel and skeleton keys alongside several vintage advertising bottle openers and miscellaneous small hardware including hooks, rings, and lock components. The materials include ferrous metals such as iron and steel, and copper alloys including brass and bronze, with some items showing remnants of nickel or chrome plating. The keys are representative of Victorian-era locksmithing, while the stamped metal bottle openers date from the early to mid-20th century. Manufacturer marks on the openers include Bullgard’s, Crown, Family Opener, and a partial mark for Schweppes. The keys feature various numerical and alphabetical stamps on the bows. The manufacturing methods include casting for the earlier keys and industrial stamping for the advertising pieces. Dimensions: Bin approximately 25 cm x 15 cm x 10 cm.
Condition report:
The items are offered in as-found condition. Most keys are untried and the lot is sold as a bulk hoard without identified sets or matched locks. The bottle openers appear functional but show significant surface wear. The collection exhibits a wide range of surface conditions; iron pieces show significant oxidation and heavy rust, while brass components have a deep, dark, aged patina. Plated items show varied degrees of pitting and loss of finish. The plastic storage bin is significantly damaged and cracked; contents will be bagged for transport.
