Lot 321:
Assorted Collection of Victorian and Early 20th Century Novelty and Decorative Retractable Sewing Tape Measures
Description
A diverse assembly of approximately twenty vintage and antique retractable tape measures, primarily intended for sewing and needlework. The collection features a wide array of forms, including traditional circular cases in brass and silver-toned base metals, alongside several highly sought-after novelty shapes. Notable pieces include a miniature flat iron with a red handle, a copper-toned coffee grinder, and a turned wooden barrel. Decorative finishes across the lot include embossed heart motifs, vibrant enamelled floral designs, and delicate needlepoint inserts. Construction materials range from polished brass and nickel-plated steel to early celluloid and carved wood. The internal tapes are a mixture of printed cloth and early plastic, many featuring imperial measurements. This lot represents a comprehensive cross-section of domestic haberdashery tools from the late 19th through the mid-20th century. Individual items range in size from approximately 20mm to 65mm in length.
Condition report:
The collection is offered in varied, as-found condition. Several pieces exhibit significant surface oxidation, tarnishing, and loss of original plating or enamel. Some tape mechanisms are jammed or have lost their tension, resulting in unspooled or partially extended tapes. Fraying and fading are present on several of the fabric measuring tapes. All items show signs of age-related wear consistent with domestic use.
