Lot 319:
A Late Victorian Sterling Silver Rococo Revival Photo Frame
Description
An ornate sterling silver photo frame in the Rococo Revival style, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. The silver mount is embellished with elaborate repoussé and chased decoration, featuring a dense arrangement of C-scrolls, acanthus leaves, and floral sprays against a textured ground, terminating in a shaped shell-form crest. The frame is fitted with a blue velvet-covered easel backing and a glass insert. A series of hallmarks is visible along the lower edge of the silver face, including the lion passant for sterling silver, a leopard’s head for London, and a date letter. This piece represents the opulent domestic aesthetic of the late Victorian era. Dimensions: Approximately 18 cm x 15 cm.
Condition report:
The silver mount exhibits heavy tarnish and surface oxidisation throughout, requiring cleaning to restore its original lustre. The blue velvet backing shows age-related wear, rubbing to the pile, and minor fading. The glass insert is intact with some surface dust and light scratches. The silverwork remains crisp with no significant dents or losses to the embossed motifs.
