Description

A large Japanese Satsuma style lidded earthenware jar of globular form, featuring a domed lid surmounted by a pointed finial. The vessel is richly decorated in polychrome enamels and heavy raised gilding, depicting traditional ho-ho birds (phoenixes) amidst flowering peonies and lush foliage. The central motifs are framed by elaborate patterned cartouches and intricate geometric borders against a characteristic cream-coloured ground. The underside displays a fine crackle glaze and bears an inset red four-character seal mark within a square frame. This piece exemplifies the 20th-century decorative tradition of Satsuma-style ceramics, often referred to as Royal Satsuma, produced for the international export market. Height: approximately 28 cm.

Condition report:

The jar is in good overall condition. There is fine, uniform crazing to the glaze throughout, which is characteristic of this earthenware body. Light surface wear and minor rubbing to the gilding are present, particularly on the finial and around the rim, consistent with age and handling. The piece is free from chips, cracks, or evident repairs.
