Lot 293:
An Art Deco Silvered Bronze Figure of a Harlequin, in the manner of Josef Lorenzl
Description
This Art Deco period sculpture depicts a Harlequin in a dynamic, dancing pose, characteristic of the Viennese aesthetic of the 1920s and 1930s. The figure is cast in bronze with a silvered finish, showcasing the slender, elongated proportions typical of the era. The costume is meticulously detailed with a recessed lozenge or diamond pattern, a traditional ruffled ruff collar, and a pointed jester’s cap. A small, separately cast accessory in a contrasting reddish-brown tone is attached to the waist. The sculpture is mounted upon a separate, circular stepped base of translucent pink onyx. While no signature or foundry mark is visible from the current perspective, the subject matter and stylistic execution are highly indicative of the work of the Austrian sculptor Josef Lorenzl.
Condition report:
The silvered patina exhibits significant natural oxidisation and tarnishing, particularly within the recesses of the diamond-patterned costume. There is evidence of a missing attribute from the figure\'s right hand, which likely originally held a mandolin or a theatrical mask. The pink onyx base shows minor surface wear and small chips or nibbles to the sharp edges of the stepped tiers, consistent with the age of the piece.
