Description

A large Japanese Satsuma-style ceramic vase of ovoid form, likely dating from the late Meiji to early Taisho period. The vessel is constructed from a cream-coloured earthenware body featuring a characteristic fine craquelure glaze throughout. The central decorative scheme is hand-painted in polychrome enamels and heightened with gilding, depicting a bijin (beautiful woman) in traditional attire surrounded by large peonies and floral sprays. The shoulders and base are adorned with intricate decorative borders, including fan-shaped panels and geometric diaper patterns in cobalt blue, orange, and gold. The underside of the foot is unmarked. Height: approximately 16.5 inches.

Condition report:

The vase is in good condition with minor wear to the gilded rim and surface soiling on the unglazed foot ring. There is extensive crazing throughout the glaze, which is inherent to the manufacture of Satsuma-style earthenware. Two auction labels are currently affixed to the body.
