Lot 289:
Chinese Cloisonne Enamel Brass Collection
Description
A collection of eight assorted pieces of Chinese cloisonne enamel on a brass base, dating predominantly from the 20th century. The group showcases the traditional cloisonne technique, where intricate patterns are formed using fine brass wires to create cells for the polychrome enamel paste, a method distinct from the carved channels of champleve. The colour palette includes vibrant shades of cobalt blue, turquoise, forest green, and rose pink. Decorative motifs feature traditional Chinese floral designs such as scrolling lotus, peony blossoms, and flowering prunus branches. The lot comprises a large shallow bowl in the thousand flowers (Wan Hua) style, a round covered box with a wire trellis pattern, an ornate small teapot with a gilt-ground, a pair of ovoid vases decorated with butterflies, an egg-shaped covered box, a small turquoise ginger jar, a miniature globular pot, and a small footed dish. Large bowl diameter approximately 18 cm.
Condition report:
The collection is in varied condition. The large shallow bowl shows significant enamel loss, pitting, and oxidation, particularly to the interior and along the upper rim. The pair of ovoid vases exhibit minor surface pitting and pinholes typical of the firing process. The remaining items, including the covered boxes and teapot, appear to be in generally good condition with only light oxidation to the exposed brass rims. No major structural dents are visible.
