Lot 261:
Essex MK1 Miniature Child's Hand-Crank Sewing Machine, Maroon Finish, circa 1950s
Description
This is a classic British-made Essex MK1 miniature sewing machine, a popular post-war mechanical toy designed for children or light portable use. The machine features a robust maroon-painted cast-metal frame secured to a rectangular plywood base with a natural finish. It is equipped with a polished chrome-finished hand wheel featuring a light-coloured wooden handle and a polished metal throat plate. The unit retains its tension mechanism and is currently threaded with a small spool of dark thread. While no manufacturer logos are visible from this orientation, the design and construction are characteristic of the Essex Engineering Co. of Wanstead, London. An inventory label marked 7819 is present on the throat plate. Base measures approximately 23 cm x 18 cm; total height approximately 18 cm.
Condition report:
The machine is in good vintage condition with the mechanical hand-crank action remaining functional. The metalwork shows light wear and minor oxidation consistent with age. The wooden base exhibits minor surface scuffs and scratches. The item appears largely complete with original components, though it lacks its original carry case or accessories.
