Lot 226:
A Late 19th Century Silver-Gilt and Cloisonné Enamel Scent Bottle
Description
This small silver-gilt and cloisonné enamel scent or snuff bottle is of oval form and features a caparisoned elephant surrounded by floral motifs in vibrant shades of blue, green, yellow, and brown. The vessel is decorated using a cloisonné technique with wire-work borders, where areas of translucent blue enamel reveal an engine-turned or guilloché ground beneath. The stopper is similarly decorated with a floral pattern. The underside of the footed base is stamped with a 925 sterling silver purity mark and a circular hallmark depicting a stylised insect or leaf. This piece reflects the high-quality enamelled silverwork of the late 19th or early 20th century, likely produced for the international export market. Weight: 81 grams.
Condition report:
The item exhibits wear consistent with age and handling. There are visible minor losses and surface wear to the enamel on one side of the vessel. The silver-gilt base shows moderate tarnish and light surface scratches. The stopper is present and functional.
