Lot 184:
Mid-Century Modern Elm and Beech Swan Back Windsor Armchairs by Ercol
Description
A matched pair of Mid-Century Modern “Swan Back” Windsor-style armchairs manufactured by Ercol. These iconic British chairs feature solid elm saddle seats and solid beech frames finished in a dark-coloured stain. The design is characterised by a classic hoop-back silhouette with four vertical spindles flanking a central splat, which is intricately pierced with a decorative swan motif. The elegant bentwood arms are supported by raked spindles, leading down to a thick elm seat. The chairs are raised on splayed, tapered legs. Construction follows traditional Windsor methods, notably featuring visible through-tenon joints where the legs and spindles meet the seat. Each chair retains a circular silver-toned “ERCOL” maker’s button inset to the underside of the frame. These pieces represent a refined post-war interpretation of traditional English vernacular furniture. Dimensions: 100cm H x 62cm W x 55cm D.
Condition report:
The pair is in fair original condition, showing signs of domestic use consistent with age. There is significant finish wear and rubbing to the extremities, most notably at the ends of the armrests where the dark stain has worn away to reveal the bare wood. General surface scratches, scuffs, and minor indentations are present across the frames and seats. Structurally, both chairs remain sound with no evidence of loose joints or previous repairs.
