Description
British School, late 18th/early 19th Century. A formal portrait of a gentleman, depicted in three-quarter profile against a dark, neutral background. The sitter is shown with dark, short-cropped hair, wearing a chestnut brown coat over a pale yellow waistcoat and a crisp white cravat. The work is executed in oil on board. The painting is housed in an oval gilt-wood frame featuring rope-twist and beaded decorative mouldings. A small white adhesive label with the handwritten characters 9308 D is attached to the right side of the frame.
12 x 10 in.
Condition report:
The paint surface displays significant craquelure throughout, consistent with age. There is a small area of paint loss or scuffing on the right side of the sitter’s coat and general surface grime is present. The gilt-wood frame shows a visible separation or crack in the timber at the upper left and minor surface wear to the gilding.
