British School, early 19th Century, 'Portrait of a Lady in a Lace Bonnet', (Unsigned)
Description
British School, early 19th Century. Oil on panel. A provincial Regency-period portrait of a seated woman, dressed in a black gown with a high white collar and an elaborate, lace-trimmed bonnet. The subject is positioned against a dark red draped background. The artist has employed smooth brushwork for the facial features, contrasted with textured impasto highlights in the white lace and ruff. No signature or date is visible. The painting is presented in a later, highly ornate gilded composition frame featuring scrolling acanthus leaves, large corner bosses, and a textured inner slip. 15 x 13 cm
Condition report:
The painting surface shows minor craquelure and light surface dirt. A contemporary lot sticker (9308 / 7) is adhered to the lower right corner of the panel. The frame exhibits significant wear and age-related damage, including visible cracks throughout the gesso and a prominent area of loss on the lower right inner edge.
