Italian Marquetry Inlaid Musical Side Table Sewing Box
Description
A vintage Italian inlaid musical side table, likely produced in the Sorrento region, designed to function as both an occasional table and a fitted sewing or jewelry box. The piece stands on four curved cabriole legs and features a highly polished top constructed of mahogany or walnut, extensively decorated with fine marquetry work. The inlay utilizes contrasting light and dark wood veneers to create stylized floral and foliate patterns within geometric borders. The top lifts open on hinges, secured by a brass lock plate, to reveal a fitted interior. The interior contains a removable tray section holding a collection of 34 assorted sewing notions. This collection includes 27 spools of thread arranged in three vertical rows, a tape measure, a pincushion, a pair of small scissors, a glass container, a small circular white item, a lot of loose pins and beads, and a small wooden tag bearing the inscription J & P Coats’ O.N.T. The consensus from market research indicates these items often contain a musical mechanism, though the presence and functionality of the mechanism are not confirmed visually in this example.
