A Collection of Six Tony Wood Staffordshire Character Toby Jugs
Description
A collection of six small ceramic character jugs, commonly known as Toby Mugs, attributed to Tony Wood or Wood & Sons, Staffordshire, England. The jugs are constructed from glazed earthenware and finished with a bright polychrome glaze. Each jug depicts a distinct seated figure in 18th or 19th-century style attire, including gentlemen and possibly sailors, rendered in varying color schemes including greens, reds, blues, and browns. The figures’ tricorn hats or headwear form the pouring spout of the jug. The bases are square, and inspection of the undersides reveals visible manufacturer’s marks, including stamped text such as “Nº 1 TOBY” and the name “WOOD,” confirming the Staffordshire production.
