A Chinese Export Gilt Lacquer Tea Caddy and Two Fitted Canisters (3 Items)
Description
A Chinese Export gilt lacquer tea caddy, comprising three items: the multi-sided caddy chest and two fitted metal canisters. The chest is constructed of japanned wood or papier-mâché and is raised on four stylized carved feet. The exterior decoration features extensive gold lacquer on a reddish-brown ground, detailed with borders and panels depicting architectural and figural chinoiserie scenes. The hinged lid’s interior is finished in black lacquer with gold detail, centered by an oval cartouche flanked by foliage. The chest houses two fitted silver-colored metal canisters, likely pewter or tin, each fitted with a domed, engraved octagonal lid. The stylized feet, which resemble figurines, and the metal components are noted as needing restoration due to wear and degradation. A modern adhesive label marked “6182” is affixed to the front panel.
