Description
An Edwardian 1904 silver-topped hand-painted porcelain scent bottle. The flattened, ovoid-shaped body features a hand-painted ceramic or porcelain construction. The obverse depicts a bust-length portrait of a Japanese woman wearing a kimono and holding a fan, set against a pale green and yellow landscape background. The reverse shows a complementary hand-painted landscape with green and grey foliage against a light cream and blue sky. The threaded silver stopper is hallmarked with the maker’s mark ‘D&F’ (Deakin & Francis), an anchor symbol indicating the Birmingham assay office, a lion passant for sterling silver standard, and a date letter consistent with 1904.
