A Pair of Japanese Satsuma Dragon Vases, Signed Kinkōzan, Meiji Period
Description
A pair of Japanese Satsuma baluster-form ceramic vases, signed Kinkōzan, Meiji period. Each vase is decorated in the Satsuma ware style with extensive polychrome enameling, abundant gilding, and raised moriage details. A high-relief dragon coils around the neck of each, its head projecting outwards, above a continuous, complex figural scene depicting numerous individuals, likely Rakan or Arhats, set against a densely textured and gilded background. The upper neck exhibits geometric patterns in gilt. The bases are marked with a red square seal reading 大日本薩摩錦光山 (Dai Nippon Satsuma Kinkōzan), flanked by black characters reading 日本京都 (Nihon Kyōto) on the left and 錦光山造 (Kinkōzan zō) on the right, indicating ‘Great Japan Satsuma Kinkōzan,’ ‘Japan Kyoto,’ and ‘Made by Kinkōzan’ respectively.
