Description

A 19th Century Chinese blue and white Kamcheng bowl, constructed from glazed ceramic with a bulbous body and a domed lid. The lid is surmounted by a stylized recumbent mythical creature finial. The underglaze cobalt blue decoration on a white ground primarily features scrolling clouds and stylized wave or dragon motifs. The body is fitted with two small applied lug handles. The piece exhibits widespread fine crackle (crazing) across both interior and exterior glazed surfaces. The unglazed footrim of the base and the underside rim of the lid show a brushed dark brown pigment. The underside of the base bears an underglaze blue two-character mark, ‘大明’ (Dà Míng), which translates to ‘Great Ming’.
