Lot 56:
A Pair of Chinese Crackle Glazed Warrior on Horses Motif Vases, circa 1900
Description
A pair of Chinese crackle glazed ceramic vases, dating to circa 1900, depicting warrior on horses motifs. Each vase features a baluster form with a broad flared rim, a short neck, and an ovoid body tapering to a footed base. The vessels are adorned with a fine creamy-white crackle glaze, serving as a ground for vibrant overglaze enamel decoration depicting dynamic battle scenes with warriors, some mounted on horseback, in traditional East Asian attire. Raised, dark brown glazed decorative elements, resembling stylized handles or mythical beast forms with pendant extensions, embellish the neck and shoulder. The underside of one vase bears an indistinct rectangular seal mark in dark pigment, containing four characters, one of which appears to be ‘製’ (zhi, meaning ‘made’).
