A Collection of Five Beswick Ware or Carlton Ware Lettuce Leaf and Tomato Ceramic Servingware, Circa 1930-1950
Description
A collection of five pieces of ceramic servingware, attributed to Beswick Ware or Carlton Ware, in the ‘Lettuce Leaf and Tomato’ pattern, dating from circa 1930-1950. The pieces are likely earthenware or majolica, designed in a naturalistic, trompe l’oeil style resembling green cabbage or lettuce leaves. The set includes a large round serving platter, a large oblong serving platter with two red tomato motifs at the handles, a smaller oblong serving bowl with three drainage holes and two red tomato motifs, and two matching gravy boats, each with its own leaf-shaped underplate, one of which has a single red tomato motif. The pieces feature a textured, raised relief to mimic leaf veins and ruffled edges, with a glossy glaze in varying shades of light and darker green, accented with off-white or cream interiors and bright red elements. No visible text or manufacturer’s markings are apparent.
