A Collection of Antique Weighing Instruments, including a W & T Avery Postal Scale
Description
A collection of antique weighing instruments, comprising two distinct scales and associated weights and containers. The primary piece is a counter-top balance scale, identified by web intelligence as a postal scale, featuring a wooden base with recesses. Its brass/bronze mechanism is marked “MADE IN ENGLAND” and bears the maker’s name “W & T AVERY,” with “ACCURATE” partially visible. It is fitted with one dished pan and one flat tray. A stack of brass weights, marked “OZ,” rests in one of the base recesses. Also included is a smaller, portable beam scale with two flat, patinated metal pans suspended by green cords, accompanied by loose brass and possibly lead weights, one of which is marked “1910.” The assortment is completed by a heavily patinated metal tin, visibly marked “G.W.R.” (Great Western Railway) and seemingly containing smaller weights, and a plain rectangular wooden box.
