Description
A Caughley Cobalt & White Highly Gilded Cup and Saucer, circa 1790. This two-piece porcelain set features a white ground with extensive gilding and cobalt blue accents. The saucer has a scalloped rim adorned with a broad band of gilt dots alternating with a blue border containing gilt circles, and scattered gilt and blue floral/foliate motifs in the well. The fluted cup features a scalloped rim, gilt foot, and complementary scattered motifs, including a distinctive gilt and blue insect (possibly a bee) inside its base. Both pieces bear a small, underglaze blue mark, resembling an “S.” or “5.”, on their undersides.
