A Chelsea Derby Tea Bowl and Saucer Set, Japan Pattern, circa 1784-86
Description
A Chelsea Derby tea bowl and saucer set, dating to circa 1784-86, decorated in the vibrant Japan pattern. The polychrome enamels include red, blue, green, and pink, accented with gilding, depicting mythical beasts, geometric patterns, and stylized floral motifs. A blue pseudo seal mark is visible in the center of the saucer, with another rectangular blue mark on its reverse. The set bears labels identifying it as from the ‘Dr. J. R. Freeman Collection’ (P58976/2 and P58976/1 for the cup) and ‘Stoke-on-Trent City Museum & Art Gallery C 2455’.
