A Pair of English Windsor Wheelback Side Chairs
Description
A pair of English Windsor side chairs featuring the traditional wheelback design. Each chair is constructed with a steam-bent hoop back containing seven turned spindles and a centrally positioned pierced splat decorated with a wheel motif. The solid wood seats are shaped with a shallow saddle contour. The understructure comprises turned legs united by an H-shaped stretcher. The two chairs feature differing finishes; one is stained in a medium-brown oak tone, while the other has a significantly darker, near-black finish. A small white rectangular label is affixed to the top of the hoop on the lighter-coloured chair. These chairs represent a classic style of regional British country furniture common in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
