A Collection of Mason's Ironstone Tableware in the Cathay Pattern
Description
A collection of English ironstone tableware decorated in the Cathay pattern. The group features transfer-printed and hand-painted polychrome floral motifs, including peonies and scrolling foliage in shades of purple, orange, blue, and green, with gilded accents on a cream-coloured ground. The collection includes a large flared vase, a lidded tureen with a matching stand, graduated octagonal jugs with handles, a large lobed bowl with a matching ceramic ladle, and small plates with scalloped rims. The underside of an octagonal vessel bears a blue printed mark consisting of the word MASON’S arched above a crown device with a registered trademark symbol, followed by the pattern name Cathay and the words MADE IN ENGLAND below a dotted line. The base also shows a small hand-painted or impressed arrow-like symbol and a single digit. Several items bear white adhesive auction lot stickers printed with 306 SHELBY AUCTIONEERS. One piece has a small white adhesive label with handwritten numerals.
