Stylised Polychrome Wooden Statue of the Madonna and Child
Description
A modernist wooden statue depicting the Virgin Mary and the infant Christ. The figures are rendered with the elongated forms and simplified features characteristic of mid-20th-century religious art. The Virgin Mary is shown wearing a hooded white outer robe over a blue undergarment, her hands and face finished in a gold tone. She cradles the Christ child, who is wrapped in white swaddling with gold-toned hair and features. The statue is mounted on an integral octagonal base finished in gold-toned paint. A small paper inventory label is present on the right side of the robe, bearing the handwritten numbers 12567 and 1.
