W. P. Carey after William Hogarth and Sir James Thornhill, The House of Commons, 1803 Line Engraving
Description
A 19th-century line engraving on paper titled The House of Commons. The work depicts a historical session of the British parliament, including figures such as Sir Robert Walpole and Speaker Arthur Onslow. The print is based on an original painting by William Hogarth and Sir James Thornhill dating to circa 1730. The composition shows the interior of the Commons with various members seated and standing. The engraving features a clearly defined plate mark visible within the window of the mount. It is housed in a modern, dark wood frame with a gilded inner bead and a multi-layered cream mat featuring a gold-leaf border line and a small printed gold crest on the left. The crest consists of a gilded crown atop a shield containing the number 40.
